Description
The CH-46 Sea Knight has been a work horse for both the US Navy and US Marine Corp since the Viet Nam war. Designed for the Navy as a personnel transport and for vertical replenishment duties.
The Marines got the "Bullfrog" in 1961. It provides all-weather, day-or-night assault transport of combat troops, supplies and equipment. Additional tasks include combat support, search and rescue (SAR), support for forward refueling and rearming points, CASEVAC and Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel (TRAP).
While the United States Navy retired the airframe on 24 September 2004, replacing it with the MH-60S Knighthawk, the Marine Corps plans to maintain its fleet until the MV-22 Osprey is fully fielded, sometime in 2014.
